Philippine Short Track Team Solid in Historic Competition Debut

The Philippine Short Track Speed Skating Team made their competitive debut in the 2018 SEA Short Track Speed Skating Trophy, held last March 31 to April 1 in The Rink @ JCube in Singapore. The event marked the first time in history that the Philippines sent more than one skater to any international competition. It was also the first time a Philippine Team participated in a Short Track Relay event.
The team brought home a total of 11 medals, all won by ladies. Anna Lourdes Cruz won gold medals in all her races (500m, 1000m, and 1500m) and an additional gold medal and trophy for being the Senior Ladies' overall champion. Corinne Molly Martinez (Junior A) and Kayla Gonzales (Junior C) both won bronze medals in all their races as well, with Gonzales receiving an additional bronze medal for the overall ranking. The Men's Relay Team composed of Kevin Villanueva, Lyle Nikol Cadiz, Jose Luis Mulingtapang, and Marc Gonzales finished fourth behind Republic of Korea, Singapore, and Malaysia. Members of the Philippine Team include: Anna Lourdes Cruz (Senior Ladies), Corinne Molly Martinez (Junior A Ladies), Kayla Gonzales (Junior C Girls), Anthea De Guzman (Junior D Girls), Kevin Villanueva (Senior Men), Lyle Nikol Cadiz (Junior A Men), Jose Luis Mulingtapang (Junior B Men), Alexander James Figueros (Junior B Men), Marc Gonzales (Junior C Boys), and Hans Buemio (Junior E Boys). The Philippine Short Track Team has vowed to continue to train hard to fulfill their gold medal aspirations in the 2019 SEA Games. |
