Ice skating was introduced to the Philippines in the early 1990s upon the construction of the first ice skating rink in the country in SM Megamall. By the early 2000s, figure skating as a sport was gaining popularity in the country, and Filipinos became interested in competing internationally. The PHSU was founded and became a member of the ISU for figure skating in 2004. This has enabled many Filipino skaters to experience competing among the world's best. The Philippines also became a member of the ISU for speed skating in 2017.
